A class to make the art of sound engineering understandable to anyone!

 

Class Outline

1. Intros / Expectations / Microphones – 2 hrs
Check in: previous knowledge levels,
group expectations, discussion of sound/mic’s basics.

Sound: Frequency, Amplitude, Velocity,
Harmony, Standing Waves, and PHASE issues

Microphones: What are they? Different kinds,
when to use, & how they work.

Alternating Current generation basics. Cable types: Balanced/Unbalanced, and usage.
Differences between Mic/Inst/Line level signal.

2. Basic Equalization – 2hrs
EQ? What is it!?! Types, when to use them, and why.
So deep and important we spend the whole class on this one subject!

3. Basic Dynamics Processing – 2hrs
Compression, Limiting, Gating, Expansion.
Hmmm…. What are those? and Why should I care?
One of the most interesting and complex parts
and art at the heart of what we do!

4. Audio Recording Principles – History of Tape/Digital – 2hrs
Machine Types, Analog vs. Digital, History,
Strengths & Weaknesses of the Technology.
Noise floor / Distortion / Quantization Error,
PCM vs. Lossless vs. Lossy Formats

5. Mixing – 2hrs
Mixing Consoles – Routing Signal,
Wet / Dry FX Mixing, Sound pressure levels- Dangers,
FX Basics – Reverb, Delay, Elements of Mixing: Using basic audio recording principles to create a balanced mix.
